Much more than runways and airport terminals, Changi district is a beachside escape and an important World War II site. The infamous Changi Prison, which is still in use, was the location of a WWII POW camp where Allied trips and civilians were interned by the Japanese. Horrific brutalities were committed here. The nearby Changi Museum recounts the Japanese invasion and daily lives of the prisoners in a moving display of photos and information boards. Entering the Changi Cell, it's impossible not to feel the confinement that the POWs felt in the stuffy, dark alleyway where they were kept. The centerpiece of the museum in the wooden chapel with a brass cross made from used ammunition casings. Particularly moving are the notes and mementos left in the walls from visitors.
